First, great idea for a sub-forum.

I'm in the process of restoring the badges on my 76 SII. Did the original "International" plate on the tailgate have a brushed finish or was it a highly polished piece? Were the insides of the letters originally black or is that dark stuff just years of dirt?

Also, what is a good way to treat the pitting on the badge?

Mine is good shape other than some moron broke the mounts off. It is black in the letters and the surface has a "stainless steel" brushed look to it.

It has a brushed finished. A good way to restore it even if pitted, is just wire wheel the hell out of it, then paint the inner letters black. Finally, to keep the metal clean, put a good coat of wax on the steel avoiding the newly painted black letters.

(Paint first, because paint won't stick to wax!)

Mine appears to have almost a wrinkle look to it... is it supposed to look this way or is this the result of casting and then painting? Just curious.

On the NOS one that I have it has black letters,it is brushed on the raised portion and chrome around the(lower)frame.
