This month's trail run will be Sat, Aug 29th on the Mogollon Rim, near Forest Lakes, AZ.

The main run will head to Weimer Point, overlooking Chevelon Lake. We can then bounce around a variety of trails for as long as the group is interested. Trails are stock friendly, but working 4WD is recommended.

Overnight camping will be near Black Canyon Lake, pending availability, details below. If you prefer to stay in permanent accommodations, try the Forest Lakes Lodge: http://www.forestlakeslodge.com/

This is the route for those interested:

Meetup #1: Friday Evening, Black Canyon Lake - Jeff H, Jimmy L
If you want to come early, the group is going to secure a camping spot in the dispersed camping area near Black Canyon Lake on Friday night. We plan to use the same location for Saturday night.

From Phoenix, take SR87 North to Payson
Take US 260 East (right at the McDonalds) toward Heber
In 39 miles, take a right on Forest Road 300
In 2.5 miles, take a left on Black Canyon Road
The group will find a campsite before getting to Black Canyon Lake, probably on the left
    Approximate Location:https://www.google.com/maps/place/B...0x872ec782dbe050bd:0x9e508504b4ea909e!6m1!1e1

Meetup #2: Saturday Morning at 7AM, Baja Gas - Tom Hansen, J.P. Coughlin

If you are coming from Phoenix, meetup at Baja gas at 7AM. Plan is to get to the rum by 10AM. The group will caravan up the hill.
Baja Gas (across from Ft. McDowell Casino)
    10180 N Fort McDowell Rd
    Fort McDowell, AZ 85264
    https://www.google.com/maps/place/B...0x872ba2cf24664e41:0x8453dec5c85cea6f!6m1!1e1

Meetup #3: Camper's Country Corner, Forest Lakes, AZ - NO LONGER A MEETING PLACE

We have no one planning on meeting at Campers Country Corner, so we are going to meet at the campsite instead. Contact J.P. Coughlin or Tom Hansen, or email officialsdsaz@gmail.com, if you are coming Saturday and need to meet us before we hit the trail.

    Hope to see you there!

    J.P.

Still trying to finalize who is going when and publish some lists later this week.

I will meet the group at 10AM Sat at the Country Corner. I won't be camping Sat night but can help direct people as needed.

Since some people are having trouble with the links, here's a few more details that give approximate camping locations for Friday and Saturday night.

The camping is dispersed, which means it's on national forest land, no camp hosts, fees or facilities.

A great location is just west of Black Canyon Lake along Forest Road 86 (Black Canyon Rd). There are outhouses ~0.5mi away at Black Canyon Lake.

The exact location will depend on what is available when Jeff H, Jimmy and Jason(tentative) show up on Friday night, so that group should sync up so they're all in the same spot for Friday night.

Note: It is NOT the Black Canyon Rim Campground or Black Canyon Campground, which are paid, single-family campsites.

    Written directions from Payson:
Take US 260 East (right at the McDonalds) toward Heber
In 39 miles, take a right on Forest Road 300. Stay left at any forks.
In 2.5 miles, take a left on Black Canyon Road
Some of the best campsites are approximately 2.7 miles down Black Canyon Road, before getting to the lake.

    OK, here's the latest tallies:

Friday, meeting at campsite - Jeff H, Jimmy and his family
Saturday 7AM at Baja Gas - J.P., Tom H and daughter, Denise (tentative)

All are camping Sat night. I will post more exact location once we get up there.

We will not be meeting at Campers Corner since we haven't had any RSVPs that want to meet there. If anyone decides to come up last minute, call JP or Tom, or send an email to officialsdsaz@gmail.com and we'll sync up.

Pack your rain gear and get ready to put some mud on the tires, it's gonna be a wet weekend...

For the rest of you, this is the view you'll be missing from the top of Weimer Point!

Seems like everyone had a nice time on the campout and trail run!

Jeff H and Jimmy L (Along with his wide and 3 daughters) made a caravan up to Forest Lakes on Friday night and found a nice, large campsite near Black Canyon Lake. Jeff brought his Scout and Jimmy and family brought their Durango and camper. Tom H. and his daughter Olivia brought the "Engineer Scout" and met J.P. with his Honda CRV Saturday morning at Baja gas, then headed up the hill to pickup J.P.'s Scout "Henrietta" in Christopher Creek.

Tom helped J.P. bolt down the hard top, then they headed up to get gas in Forest Lakes before meeting the rest of the group at the campsite.

After setting up camp, we packed up for the trail ride. Jimmy stayed back with the family and went fishing, and Jeff was having electric fan trouble so decided to ride with J.P. instead of risk overheating on the trail.

We attempted a shortcut out of the Black Canyon area along a closed forest road, but were prevented from exiting onto 260 due to a locked gate. After back-tracking about a mile, we ran a slightly modified loop up FR99 (FR Level 4), left on FR175 (FR Level 2/3), Right on FR170 (FR Level 4), Left on FR90 (FR Level 1/2) to Weimer Point. You can compare our picture below to the one i posted in advance - pretty spot-on!

IMG_3187.JPG Full route linked to Google Maps below.

We spent a good amount of time admiring the view and splashing through some nice mud puddles, which Olivia particularly enjoyed. No major mechanical difficulties were encountered.

After picking up some additional beverages at the store, we enjoyed steaks, chicken, corn, potatoes and apple cobbler for an amazing dinner.

There are endless miles of trails and fun on the Rim, so we're hoping to go again and do some more exploring.

Thanks to everyone who came and made it a great time!
