Greetings. The old Nissan is running! Thanks for all the help. So my 74 Scout 11 has a Nissan with a 3 speed. It's 2 wheel drive. If I wanted to drop in a 4 speed, what fits? Would it have to be a 2 wd tranny, or does a 4 wd fit? Still new at this. Any difference between gas or diesel tranny?

    Glad you got it running.

The transmission "bell housing" is Diesel only. If you take a look at where it bolts up you'll see that the interface is round. It's an SAE #4 (I think) pattern. The part it bolts to is mounted to the engine behind the flywheel and stays with the engine.

I had a housing once, don't recall if it was for a three or four speed but it was like ten inches long. I dunno if the transmissions were unique to the Diesels.

Maybe search here and in the classifieds for a picher.

If the Nissan was in a Scout originally any scout transmission will fit except the automatic. The scout used a Borg Warner T 19 close ratio in the diesel Scout.

The scout used a married transfer case. So you want to look for one that was 2 wheel drive. Or from a IH full-size which can be either 2 or 4 wheel drive since the full size used a divorced transfer case. If it is a full size it could be a t-18 which means no syco first gear

But he needs the Diesel bell housing, no?

If he already has a Diesel engine with an IH transmission mounted to it, and if both the 3- and 4-speed units all use the same mounting, then he just needs an IH 4-speed transmission which has a driveshaft output. He must already have the correct bell housing.

Well, he only said "Scout 11 has a Nissan with a 3 speed" so theoretically, it could have been a three-speed auto...

I need to be more specific. I have a 3 speed manual behind my Nissan. Wondering what 4 speed would fit.
