Length of the sending unit wire is irrelevant, as long as it reaches from the fuel tank sending unit to the fuel selector switch on the dashboard.
Check your distributor operation per the attached doc.

1974 came from factory with an alternator with integral voltage regulator.
You should have a GM 10SI alternator,...approx. 37 amp or 62 amp.
