View Full Version : Bad gears, now what?

I gambled when I bought my Scout II, because the PO said the rear end made some noise. I hoped that he just had the wrong fluid in the diff, but I was wrong. I knew that the clutches in the Trac-lok were shot so I pulled the carrier today.

I not only found axle and carrier bearings that need replaced, but also pitted teeth on the ring gear. So now what?
The stock gears are 2:72s, but with the bored 392 and stockish tires the Scout has good power. I can't afford to get fancy on the repairs. I am trying to decide whether to buy new parts and repair what I have or try to find a good used rear axle or pair of axles with a different gear set.

What gear ratio(s) are you looking for?

I have a front and rear axle off an older full size pickup that have 4.09/4.10 gears in them. I bought them for the drum brake parts and don't really need the gears in them. Not even sure they would fit. Not sure of condition either. Have to pull the covers and peek.

I could probably part with them both for cheap.

I think I still have a ring and pinion at home that are in the mid to low 3.xx range. I'll check when I get home this afternoon. If you want them I'll let you have them for $20.

I'm not sure about the compatability factors either. I know that if I change the gear ratio I will have to change the front and rear. I was hoping to just change the rear to a good set of 2:72 gears and leave the front alone for now. Most of my driving will be on the road and I don't need really steep gears with that big engine. I probably should have posted on the general forum, but I was hoping someone in this area might check in on this one. (like you guys have) Thanks.

I would bite the bullet and rebuild the front and rear. And go with 3:55 or so.

Randys ring and pinion has 3.54's for $137 a set. Then just fix the trac lock.

I am betting the front gears maybe just as bad. :hammer:

I am guessing you are right about the front gears. It appears that the kid who had this thing drove it in water and then let it sit. It is more clear why the dad volunteered to deliver the Scout to me instead of me driving it home. The faint little rumble would have probably become a howl before I got home and I might have stopped payment.
I need to pull the front cover and take a look at those gears.

Also check the axle vents. Make sure they are clear and you may want to extend them up to keep them out of the water.

I had read about extending the vents in some other posts. Although I don't plan on any deep water excursions there are some creeks to ford where I hunt and I would hate to mess up a bunch of recently replaced gears and bearings.

If youd be interested, I have a Scout II missing the transmission and transfer case with a severely beat body that I would sell for the price of the matched set of good dana 44s its also got a good 304 in it

I just checked and the extra R & P I have are also 3.54.

Sounds like a possibility. I sent you an email.

I don't know if reviving an old post is appropriate, but thanks to Matt I now have the parts I need. My brother and I made the 100+ mile drive to Matt's and with the aid of his dad and a tractor with a front end loader got the Scout loaded. The loading was about as easy as it gets.
We tried to clean off the loose screws and bolts in and on the scout, but with the hole in the Drivers side floor and the door not being attached we lost leaves and debris all the way home. Once, in the mirror, I saw what looked like a double hand full of leaves fly off the pass side when we hit a bump. I think it was rust flakes. :D I won't feel bad about parting this one out.
On a similar note, this morning when I climbed up on the rear bumper to look at the roof, the roof rack was slightly attached in one front socket. I gave a light tug and it came out! A few more miles and it would have fallen out on the road.

It was really good meeting yall, you should post up some picks of yalls Studes Im sure all of us would like to see them:D

I drove that Scout around in almost that exact shape, it did have front fenders and a hood but everything else was the same I never noticed the roof rack was loose but with the kind of shape everything else was in its no surprise:oops:

Matt, I never thought about posting Studebakers on a Scout forum. I didn't figure it would be appropriate. None of my Studes look like much now, but one of my brothers looks pretty good.
