Got home today and went to get in the new scout to move it and the ignition was busted out with a screwdriver tip broke off in it. Someone tried to steel it tday or last night and jambed the iginition in so far they couldn't turn it. I spent several hours tonight pulling a iginition out of a parts scout then got that in and the turn signal mechanism was messed up so ran back over in the field pulled one out, what a job...the one I pulled had a broken wire...all and all after 3 trips to my folks spent nearly 5 hours..it's 11 and started in on this at six. I probably will have to replace the entire column the key sticks and will not return unless you do it by hand so have to be careful so the starter doesn't stay engaged...At least they didn't get out of the drive with it..Must be someone around needs parts, someone last week stole my neighbors cj7 rims and tires and another guy I know someone stole some scout parts from him 2 weeks ago...My security cameras didn't detur them I have two on the front of the house...so stopping by Meijers tomorrow to stock up on some shells...my gun will be loaded by the front door...So you Great Lakes Binder guys in my area heads up about thieves...

Make sure them shells are buckshot, preferrably OOO. It's cold out, so you need something to penetrate jackets and cold-weather pants. I used both OOO and OO.

Not sure how it works in MI but in TX you have the right to protect your property.

That's why I have been keeping the Marlin 335 .35 rem at the ready for the pumpkin smashing teenagers and similar underbred cretins eyeing tools in my van. You never know how many layers they are wearing on the colder nights.

When I lived in MI, we loaded up with 00 buck / slug combos. Gives a nice pattern and good penetration as you alternate which is loaded. Great home protection & I still have one loaded that way behind the door.
It sucks that we have to go to this kind of extreme to protect our property, but it seems like we have to more and more.
As for MI laws concerning protecting your property, they've most likely changed since I've lived there, but you could not cause harm to anyone unless they had crossed your house door step and threatened your safety. The castle law that exists in many states wasn't adopted in Michigan from my previous review of the laws there when I was going to get my Concealed Carry... From what I remember, you better ensure that they collapse and don't get up while still in the house, or you can be charged with aggravated assault or murder 1; there was not self defense clause.
Good luck keepin your scouts safe.

Michigan's "Castle Doctrine" was signed into law in 2006, but basically only covers an imminent threat to you or your family...not for protecting your property.

Another thought to consider is to have a "less than lethal" round (bird shot, target load, "bean bag", etc) for #1 in order to help "lawyer proof" yourself. Sad times we live in, eh? Anyway, sorry for turning a Scout thread into a gun thread...but IH did make M1 Garands, so....

Don't need a shotgun I gots a .45. Combined with my PD rounds(HPs), they can wear lots of layers, they just won't be around to tell their stories. I also know a few pig farmers too. I have had stuff stolen from me, even with Melissa home. The methheads were soo ballsy, that they even knocked on the door and rang the doorbell. I haven't had Melissa out at the range with the pocket rocket .40, but with 11 rounds loaded, I think she'd hit something vital. Now she opens the upper window at the back door, and tries to identify the vehicles in the driveway. I also keep moving the vehicles around in the driveway some, so if we are being 'watched', they don't know what we are going to be driving the next day. That helps some too. Darren, if nothing else, either pull the batteries on the driveway ones, or just pull the coil wire. Can't steal what you can't start.

16% unemployment, I can understand that, but your neighborhood sure didn't look like downtown Detroit....luckily I haven't had that problem yet, out in the boonies and well lit, they know they'd make good targets :gun_bandana:

You got a point there, BUT using buckshot gives you a chance at making a hit, and remember, in Texas and other states, you do not shoot to kill, but to stop.

Thanks for the update. I moved out of MI in 2005. It reads like I would expect it to for that state.

I don't agree with it, but in Michigan...
You point a gun at someone over a piece of property, you WILL lose. As was said, they'd better be IN your house, threatened you life WITH A GUN, and be dead.

Anybody that has anything of value better batten down the hatches if they want to keep it. It's becoming a war out there as to who's going to steal your stuff first, the crackheads or the meth 'tweakers'. They'll take anything that isn't nailed down as long as they can sell it or trade it for their 'stuff'. The cops one county over busted a couple guys last week that they suspected in a bunch of car and home breakins at night, found a load of stolen property on them, and put in the paper that they figured the crime rate out in that area would slow down. Yeah, right, the next few nights they got hammered again, except where the old guys would just get into unlocked cars and open garage doors and take stuff, the 'new' guys are busting windows out of cars to get the change from the center consoles, along with radios and whatever people leave inside. I busted a guy a few weeks ago (crackhead) who was crusing the university library looking for stuff to steal; I found two expensive cheesecakes (no lie!) in his backpack, along with boltcutters and his 'smoking kit'. I was able to track down the owner of the cheesecakes (which he had taken from an employee break room in the library) and arrested him for theft, as for the bolt cutters, we had been losing high end bikes at the university for a while.....he didn't admit it, but since then, go figure, no more bikes gone! He was riding the bus out to us, stealing whatever he saw laying out, then ripping a bike to ride home and save the bus fare, plus probably make another $20 for rock from the bike. The bad news is property crimes are low profile, 'crimes against persons' like robbery are up, and the system is out of money. When the bad guys come in and whine about being addicted, they get probation or electronic monitoring so they can do it again because there is no room in the jails. I don't know the answer, I'm just trying to keep my stuff and make it harder for them to steal the stuff at work.....but it's a constant battle.

Maybe soemthing like a Tazer in lieu of the airbag, (LOL).:D
Dennis, I bet you've seen alot these last couple of years. Sad part is that it's not just the "Big City" anymore, but everywhere. I had cousins in Detroit back in the seventies and it was scary there then. Can't imagine it nowadays, for the poor few who still have a home amongst the "ruins" and foreclosures. Sadtimes indeed. Stay safe out there buddy!

When I was getting insurance on the Scout the Insurance lady was trying to dissuade me from getting full coverage on the Scout.
I can afford the 23 a month for full coverage for just this reason.
