So as a new guy, what's the deal?
New guy always brings the Food and drinks to the next meeting.....:tt2:
Just kidding. You are welcome to bring your vehicle to have some help from some experienced IHer's on things that need to be done.
This will be the first wrench day that the club has ever had to my knowledge, but at other club's work days I have heard of people bringing wiring kits to completely re-wire there scout. Other maintenance things like installing after market accessories and as simple as helping/showing people how to change plugs-cap-wires-points-Ect or even oil changes.
If you have something you want to accomplish that you are not real sure of, post some questions here and you will get responses on what you might need to bring or do.
These are a great bunch of folks and there is a plethora of knowledge just waiting to be tapped

Alright, this sounds like it will be fun and I hope that everyone can make it out!
As Fred stated, this is a good chance to just learn more about your Scout, do some basic maintenance or even bolt up that piece / part that has been collecting dust in the corner of your garage.
I will be there and since my Scout is still on jackstands I will be more than happy to help out anyway I can. I can bring a voltmeter to help track down those electrical gremlins and drag my MIG over if anyone needs anything welded up. Please just post up and let me know ahead of time.

What do we need, about 20 guys and about a week lol
If I'm in town, I'd be glad to help someone else out, all my stuff's in Big D

Fred,
I replied to the e-mail and haven't spent a whole lot of time on the new site since they switched, actually this is the first time.... I would really like to make it and help out but I am in Mexico till the 15th of March, for some strange reason my wife thinks I need to make a living...:D
For those that don't know me my name is Curtis Mullins but most people call me Bud... I live in Montgomery and have a 72 Scout II that is registered and I do drive it on the street... Most of the time it stays at our lease in Kerrville but I have plans of making it a truly dependable, road worthy truck one day...
I hope to make one of these events, I work in the oilfield and travel quite a bit though... My schedule will line up one of these days!!!
I just recently bought a complete spare truck and have the hopes of rebuilding the motor, tranny and x-fer case out of it to put in mine... So, I will be looking for some serious advice when that time gets closer...

I think I'm coming down to Houston to go to the Wrenchday
Anyone that needs some parts, let me know, maybe I got em
sullyscout77
02-25-2009, 03:30 AM
Really looking forward to Saturday. I will bring my excess Scout II accumulations, (parts), and suggest others do as well. No harm in swapping parts, right? As stated before, some of the biggest help you senior IHers can give me is the wisdom of your experience in how to determine a "sequence of events" going forward. My Scout is not roadworthy yet and I have already bought an 18 circuit wire harness from Hot Rod Accessories out of Dallas area. I have just rebuilt entire front end and was gonna move to rear end, but now need to tear out fuel tank and assess rust of rear deck and passenger side inner and outer fender. Hot work should preceed new fuel tank and rear brakes and suspension, correct? It's just hard to wait as I am dieing to get on the road. We'll talk more Saturday.:wrenching:,
Paul Morgan
02-25-2009, 07:50 AM
It's pretty easy to replace the rear floor
I'm in the process on one of mine, replacing it with aluminum diamond plate
Alot of people just throw more metal on top of the rusted stuff but that sucks
Paul Morgan
02-25-2009, 08:07 AM
Hey Fred
What do you need to get your truck on the road
If you want to take it to the shop some time this week, maybe we can all gang up on it this Saturday
You got a motor ready to go into that bad boy?

Here's some food for thought; maybe sometime, in the spirit of OVERHAULIN', we could have a day where the Senior gearheads come to the rescue of the "mechanically inept" for a day at thier garage. We could call it something like "Bound Binder Day", intended to help club members who are in a bind,:cornfused:, either due to lack of tools, talent , technique or just feel overwhelmed. If able, the host provides lunch and drinks. Just an idea to toss around.

02-25-2009, 11:07 AM
That sounds awesome! I need some guys with some top notch fab skills...mine are kinda middle notch, lol
Paul Morgan
02-25-2009, 11:24 AM
Yeah, it's overwhelming at times in dealing with these trucks
What would be good, is to have a welder/fabricator, an electrical whiz, a mechanic, a brake guy, a body man
It's hard to be all those things
If you notice on Overhaulin or other shows, there are specialists who do each
It kind of sucks when you do it all yourself and you make mistakes, not knowing any better
With a few experts around, at least they can get you on the right track

I like the idea
A person who can't bring their scout to wrench day because it is not streetable.
They host a "help me on my truck please day/night"
Next time they are able to go help another "garage ornament" become streetable.
The only snag I see is equipment/tools at the "host" house might be a bit thin so we would need to be able to have specific request for someone to bring along their_______(fill in the blank) tool
We need to vist this a bit stronger this coming weekend and also at the next meeting.

This is a good idea and works great. A few years ago I was trying to get my Scout ready for the Rendezvous in Colorado and had about a week or so to go and a huge laundry list of stuff I knew I couldn't get done by myself. We had about 6 people over and really were able to get a LOT of things done. I bought pizza and refreshments for everyone and if I remember right it was a good time although it was July in Houston!!
Here is a picture I have from that day, as you can see lots to do!
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu303/jpeater/JPEater%20Project%20Pictures/Other-image15.jpg
Unfortunately the ending to that story was I couldn't get the air out of the brake system and the power steering pump leaked like a strainer so at about 2AM the night before I called it quits and we took the wife's Jeep.
I am game just let me know where and when and what you need.
Paul Morgan
02-25-2009, 09:44 PM
Isn't that the brunt of it
I would bring my Scout to the Wrenchathon, except I have to put it on the trailer and I don't have a trailer
It would be cool to go and help some poor SOB put his truck together in one weekend at his house where his disabled truck resides
Get that thing running, driving, stopping, actually roadworthy
That would make one hell of a cable TV show
I think it would be cool to send several trucks throulgh a body shop at the same time, with a bunch of people working on them
The same with electrical, mechanical, brakes, etc
Focus maybe on one phase for all vehicles
Or, focus on one vehicle and several phases, like Dirk's example
Anyway, who needs what for Saturday
I'm not bringing a truck, but I'm bringing myself
Dirk Kolnsberg
02-26-2009, 07:17 AM
Do we have a list of who is going and any idea what needs to be worked on? From this post and a few others it appears that some, like me, are without a drivable IH vehicle so hopefully someone will have one we can kick the tires on at least :D
The new club naming poll will close Saturday morning so if you haven't voted please do so and we can reveal the winner at the wrench day. Then Curt can begin whipping up an awesome wicked logo for us :punk:
Looking forward to the event and will bring some swapping and selling parts too.
Paul Morgan
02-26-2009, 07:29 AM
Yeah
We need to know who needs what or we'll just show up and star at each other
Anybody that has the infamous leaky valve cover gaskets, that's an easy fix
I've got some that are already cleaned and painted IH Red, if anyone's interested, 50 bucks and I'll help you put em on
I guess we need a headcount and a list like Dirk was saying so we know what to bring

Man, I'm lovin' the enthusiasm I'm seeing here. Personally, my Scout has several items keeping it in my garage and I really need the advice; Problems are as follows;
1) I have started it momentarily but before I had timing worked out, the new coil was getting hot, (don't have ballast resistor, if that matters). The wiring is "rigged" as it had all wires under dash cut from PO, has a push button starter and redundant Ford solenoid on fire wall to get away from headers. (hard to see what's going where). (have new 18ckt aftermarket harness).
2) have new front brakes installed but haven't hooked up yet, (was waiting to do back and run new hard lines). Have the new hoses to install and new power booster/master cylinder already installed.
3) run temporary rubber gas line to gas can to start due to sediment in tank from PO. 4) have excess positive camber on right front driver side, (see slight wrinkle in frame just fwd of rear leaf mount).
These are my major hiccups now, I don't have access to trailor, but would blow a n*t loading and unloading this pig by myself. (continued)>>>
sullyscout77
02-26-2009, 10:28 AM
>>> Like I said, the advice would be a big plus. I can't bring my Scout, but if it looks like we're all gonna stare at each other, My Scout resides 15 miles north of JP, (LOL).
I have engine stand, engine hoist, torque wrench, Compressor, etc,... which I can run to the house and get. I will bring my 76-77 manual, parts catalog and a 74-78 Chilton's for technical reference for whosever Scout we wrench.
just let me know if we need the other items. Oh yeah, I did break down and buy the front spindle nut thin walled socket from NAPA if anyone needs to borrow. Let me know!,:wrenching:,

Would you guys be ok with a little bit farther north guy coming down, I am thinking about coming down but don't want to offend anyone, I wouldn't bring the scout cause it's not roadable, but i could bring myself and some tools, I also have some original seats front buckets and rear back seat that i could bring, also have a back glass for a top that is in very good shape, if any of you guys it, i would be willing to do some parts swapping, also have a 2barrell carb that needs rebuilt.

I am not the collective voice of our club but I say heck yes, come on down - or up - or over - or whatever!! Our aim is to support the IH loving lifestyle, whatever your interpretation of that is (more or less anyway as I suppose there might be some things people could get up to with their IH that might pose some 'good social etiquette issues' but who am I to judge) and wherever you may hail from.

02-26-2009, 07:24 PM
I think i' gonna make it down, if anyone is interested i have a scout back glass gate, 2 bucket seats with bases, 1 rear bench seat, original center console and some other little parts i would be willing to sell cheap or trade, i am needing a tailgate, and some door panels.

Hey Rusty, list a few of the issues you want addressed so we can come prepared to help. Also list what parts you might need in case anyone has extras, as well, bring any extras that you may have.
Do we need floor jack, engine hoist, torque wrench, multimeters?????
By the way,...

1. Nasty tick in motor - valves maybe? 345
2. Carburetor needs attention won't choke. Weber
3. Body was lined up until the roof came off. Don't expect to get anything accomplished Saturday.
4. I had really planned more to work on someone elses.
5. Curious to see another scout just to compare what the PO had done vs stock.
I am more of an electric guy than engine work.

Hopefully it's not the body mount itself

Railrider, C'mon down, man. The more the merrier. I'm bringing my Milwaukee Sawzall if you want to trim those handsome new u-bolts. Good looking ride and I have plenty of bodywork questions for ya, especially on the rear deck area. See you there, :D,
Paul Morgan
02-27-2009, 10:19 AM
Alot of times that tick you hear is from the lifters being oil starved, particularly in the passenger side rear in the valvetrain
One of the reasons to run an extra quart of oil
You can put some STP or Lucas oil conditioner in there when you top or refill
Are you running synthetic or regular oil
You can pull the oilpan off, take off the oil pump pickup screen and clean it real good as well as the pan
Good way to inspect for shaving in the pan
The oil pump gets really nasty after all these years
I did one awhile back and it had the little lifter ticking noise, it went away after a few minutes with this repair...cross your fingers
The oil pan probably leaks anyway, if it's indeed an IH lol
Good to chase down all the driveway marking drippage
Dirk Kolnsberg
02-27-2009, 03:08 PM
Alright, I just finished loaded up the back of the pickup with all kinds of Scout II type stuff to offload to unsusp... I mean fellow club members :D. Here is what I have with everything priced at whatever you think is fair and as long as you don't turn around and sell it to someone for a profit or on e-bay I am pretty sure we can strike a deal.
2 radiators
2 blue bucket seats with bases and with grey seat covers I believe fit them new in box
2 mostly complete AC systems (in cab portion only)
1 York compressor
1 AC condenser
2 center console bottoms (can't find the tops)
2 mostly complete wiring harnesses circa 1977 / 1979
1 Gold box
Multiple newish upper and lower radiator hoses
Multiple tailgate and liftgate struts
Headlights and headlight buckets
Hood latch mechanisms
3 hub caps
2 fan clutches
Multiple clutch fan blades to pick from
Lots of sun visors
Dash gauges and dash gauge panel cover
2 heater controls with cables
2 Ash trays
2 Glove box doors
Lots of other stuff including some tail lights, marker lights, hood pull, window cranks, etc.
See you tomorrow.

Plus I got the new seat pedestals designed and built and i got the driver side seat insalled, I am going to get the other one done tomorrow, shouldn't take me but 30 minutes. I really wanted to make this one.

Thanks to everyone for coming out. I showed up around 11AM and there were already a couple of Scouts and about 8 other wrenchers there, some familiar faces and some new. Tires were kicked, parts were bartered, stories told and even a few wrenches were turned.
About 2PM or so we finished up at JP's shop and headed north to Jim's (aka SullyScout77) place and admired his nice resto work on his Scout. With a little bit of new gas, vacuum hoses moved about and fiddling with the timing we had it running great . After recovering from the asphyxiation from the header wraps on Jim's Scout burning in we called it a day around 5PM or so.
Unfortunately I forgot my camera but hopefully Jim and Paul can get some pictures posted here or sent over and I will get them uploaded. Overall it was a good time and hopefully we can organize another one sometime soon.

Sorry for the late response fellas, but I can't begin to thank you enough for helping bringing my baby to life. What a Great Scout Day,, I appreciate everyone working through the starvation, stale gas and gas chamber, :D, to yield a tight sounding motor, with just a minor leakage in the rear. I have already got the rear seal on order and will keep you all posted. Hats off to George, Dirk, Paul & JP for all the ensight, acknowledgement for work done and advice for the work yet to be accomplished. My Scout got his b*lls back!!

His "little" leak from the rear main seal overflowed the plastic swimming pool LOL
Seriously, after 40 gallons of oil out of a 55 gallon drum, it ran good
Good thing for Sully the price of a barrel of oil is down right now
On another note, JP, I found you some chrome flames for your beast so you can jack up the HP lol :stuart:

Hey guys,
I am really sorry I missed out on this one. I have been in serious training mode. Its MTB (mountain bike) race season until may. I have made a commitment to race this spring. I just got back from a marathon race in Big Bend. It was a killer, 60 miles on a bike through the desert. I saw Gorge Womack out there. His yellow 800 is still looking good! Wish I had mine while I was there.
I haven't been on the board sence the "BB" crash. It actually took a wile before I found out about "BP". I Have been driving the Scout to work the past few weeks. I will get back into the scout grove soon. Looks like you guys had a good time.

So Fred, when's the next Wrenchday! I'm still buzzin' from the last one and want to reciprocate. Let's get some conversation going and decide who's next. You know, get a rotation going! I know most member's have issues that need to be worked out and in this economy, money's tight. When better to rely on each other, right? I know I can't speak for everybody, but hearing my 304 fire up righteously for the first time has really "stoked the Scout fires" in me. All the help you guys gave got me outta my "rut" and back on track with my efforts. This time with focus. It was a real rush to have that kind of attention and tech talk buzzin in my driveway and I Just wanna pass that feeling along! Let's get going,...who's next, who needs what and who's got what???:wrenching:
Paul Morgan
03-12-2009, 07:29 AM
Hey Sully,
You definitely have issues
That righteous buzz is alot like Spiccoli's from Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Don't worry, It'll wear off, you just need to sleep
Don't forgot to include JP and George in the mix when you're showing love lol
That was a blast, I think a 304 might be my favorite IH motor, when you get it dialed in just right, they sound damn good
Holler at me if you want some 5' wide diamond plate
It took me a week to finally scare that stuff down
It comes in 5x12 and 5x16
I guess it's made for trailers specifically
I think we can come down once a month to do it from Dallas
My wife likes to come and hang out with her mother for the weekend
sullyscout77
03-12-2009, 05:46 PM
All my "Scout Buddies" know they have been memorialized in my Scout "baby book". Yeah, I've got IH issues, but havin' a ball. Paul, post prices on that diamond plate. 16 ft should be enough for two Scout II's and an 800, (lol). I assume you're talking about the aluminum, right? I'm still struggling between that and the steel, leaning hard towards the steel, especially after seeing Bill's pics on his '79 - looked great. Probably gonna go a similar route, except complete d-plate coverage after wrapping front and rear with sheet metal and firring in the support angles.
Plus, price would go up trailering to Dallas and back, unless you can fit it in the mini-van, (LOL)!! :D
Paul Morgan
03-13-2009, 12:01 AM
The 16' is in Houston, that's enough for 2 trucks and front floorboards 400
The 12' is in Dallas, that's enough for 2 rear cargo areas 350
I was going to cut it in half with a plasma and throw it in my F 250 if I bring it to Houston
I've already got the rear floor torn out, just waiting on the material and time
