hello all, i am looking into getting a 77 Scout II V8, 4x4 with and Auto tranny, the thing needs a little TLC but i think i will make a perfect daily/beater. i talked to the owner about it for about half an hour, seemed like a pretty honets guy, the floor panels are pretty much gone cause of rust, but that an easy fix, he is having the carbs cleaned so he could not start it up, but he said it runs like a champ so maby in about a month i will have the cash to get it but i have a few questions about the truck though....
1. whats the gas mileage like on the V8, its going to be my daily so i want to be decent....
2. how is the auto tranny, is it pretty bullet proof, or not so much
3. if i do get it, what should i start to fix first, i want it to be running fin before i think about any thing mod wise....
thanks and i look forward to being part of the community, i really have loved these trucks sense i first layed my eyes on them. i am pretty big in the San Antonio "Euro" scene, i drive an 01 jetta VR6 right now, but i am looking to get rid of it and get a 4x4 :)

Duncan,
Mileage is about 12 or 13 depending on engine and foot control. I would do all belts and hoses, check teh brakes, Transmission is not to much of a problem. any shop can rebuild one. hell my son can do one to. Welcome to the club.

First thing I would do is change all fluids, belts, hoses, check brakes for proper operation/repair, and wheel bearings. Basically what Bob said.
I've got the 77 with 304 v8, and the 727 auto as well.
Welcome! :)

Do not buy this thing thinking you will get "decent" mileage, they drink gas and that's the end of it.
You can fuel inject it, put on expensive stuff, but at the end of the day it just wasn't designed to get good mileage.
For me, what it can do has far outweighed the price to fill it up. It's mostly a weekend truck or when the weather is nice.
Your VW will always ride better, be quieter, and be faster. Scouts aren't meant to be high revving trucks (although they can move pretty good) ;)
I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I'm just giving my opinion. People get paid good money for opinions and this one's free. :)

Yep, with my set up, I get anywhere from 9 mpg around town and anything over speeds of 65 mph and 11 mpg cruising at 60 mph. I live with this though because I sold my 2002 f150 with its outragous paymenst and so so gas mileage and bought my Scout. Paying at the pump is much less than paying the bank. :)
Looking back at it now, it was probably the best thing I ever done. I have learned so much in the last year and met some really great people and picked up a new hobby as well, all because of it. :) I love my Scout!

Where is the 77 located? I read some where that there is a diesel rabbit pick-up running on veggie (bio-diesel) with 400K + miles. Any way good luck and if that 77 is still for sale we have many interested.

Is that near the Northern Tool? How much are they asking for it? I think I saw it a while back.

If it is the one I saw near Northern Tool. I agree with Allen. $1900 if WAY too much.
