Keeping with the third Saturday of each month, that puts next months meeting on January 20th (no NFL games no NCAAF games that day)! Anyone want to name a place / time? I enjoy the lunches, but I really enjoy the wrench turning events more. Does anyone have a project they would like to start/complete and would like to host? Please chime in.
I would also like to discuss some of these topics as well.
1. I think it may be beneficial to the Hill Country Binders if we have a Austin Chapter and a San Antonio Chapter. Each having their own seperate monthly meetings, then quartlerly (or whatever) have a meeting where both chapters meet in a nuetral location. I think this will promote greater turn outs and more activity. Please chime in with your thoughts.
2. I would also like to nominate a "President" to help cordinate activities. The guy I have in mind actually volunteered for the position. I will PM him first to make sure that he is Ok with the nomination before I put his name on this thread.
3. Also, I would like to discuss paying some sort of dues. I am not thinking a large amount of money, but maybe enough to get some shirts printed up and or maybe some decals of some sorts.
All please put in your two cents worth. I would really like to hear from some of the San Antonio guys on this, especially on #1.

I like the ideas. Kinda turn it into more of a club rather than a gathering. I also think keeping with one set weekend (ie 3rd weekend every month) will be very beneficial.
Having a club pres would help a lot too. Depending on what you all wanna do with the club, you could also have an on/off road coordinator. If there's money, maybe treasurer, etc.
Dues would be good, Either something like $20 a year, or something low per month to help pay for stuff. I, for one, would like to get a shirt or something made up, think that'd be pretty cool. Kinda make the club a little more official.
If we decide to go with 3rd weekend of Jan, I won't be there next month. I'll be on leave, but I think that (or another consistent weekend) would be the best plan. Either way, I'll plan on making the February meeting.

Ok, got the PM out and returned with the OK.
I nominate Eric Casey, aka Orangeblood, for the position of Hill Country Binders President.
Can I get a second or other nominations? We can then put it to vote.
I also think keeping with one set weekend (ie 3rd weekend every month) will be very beneficial.
Hey John! Any weekend is normally fine with me, like everyone else, I have to take it on a case by case basis.

I would also like to add that if we decide to move forward with this, splitting the group into two chapters, someone from each area may have to step up to cordinate for each location. Just another thought.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to make any of the meetings to meet you guys. You know how it is... if its not one thing its another. Specially since I work out of town and when I come back the honey-do list is kind of long  :) . But if you plan on having a set weekend, that would make it better for me to plan the trip up to Austin or San Antonio, I live in Edinburg, TX in the Rio Grande Valley.
Well, if you plan on doing something like that and get shirts and all count me in. Also I could suggest someone to do this for you, he is an IH enthusiast that does this type of work and I just know he could do a great job being that I have seen his work before. If you need his number please let me know and I can provide it for you. You can PM or call me at 956 457 3160.

Lord have mercy man, Edinburg is long ways! Jose, we would love to have you at one of the meetings. We will be meeting again in January, exact date and time not yet decided. Whenever a decision is made to move forward, we will definately count you in.
Ok, John has seconded. Any one else out there? Anywhere? Hello. :)

I know I have not made it to any of the meetings. But, I want to throw my pennies into the pot. And suggest that there NOT be a seperate SA and Austin chapters.

January 20 is ok with me as far as I can see. Eric has my vote for president. If he accepts the position and does a good job, I think we should double his salary! I also think we should elect a vice-president who could fill in should the president have a temporary conflict or for some other reason couldn't fulfill his duties. It has been mentioned that lunch meetings are ok but turning wrenches is much more enjoyable. I believe we should have a meeting committee, chaired the vice-president, consisting of three or four additional members who would be responsible for planning the meeting agendas. As an example, they could solicit wrench turning projects from the membership and select those that are the most worthy and interest. Of coarse if they are small projects, more than one could be done during a meeting. Also the type of projects would dictate the meeting location.
Sometimes a shop with appropriate tools would be required. Dues are ok with me---they proably wouldn't be much. Has the logo been finalized? If so maybe be can move forward with ordering some decals and perhaps caps and shirts, that is after we get a membership list formalized. Sorry for the rambeling----just some food for thought.

Hey Mike it's good to hear from you! Have you talked to Skip recently? I haven't seen him on the BB in a while.
In the initial stages of forming our organization I was against separate SA and Austin chapters. However, after traveling to a number of meetings and gauging attendance I have a better understanding of the limitations imposed by traveling an hour and a half each way for meetings. I feel it would improve attendance as a whole to have separate chapters that held monthly meetings. The chapters could hold their meetings on different weekends, so if you couldn't make the Austin meeting you could catch the SA meeting. I would still like to see combined quarterly meetings, trail runs, barbeques, etc.
I agree with most of what Bill has proposed, especially the dual leadership and committee suggestions. As much as I want to, it will be impossible for me to make every meeting and trail run. That said, I welcome the challenge of President, should that be the consensus of the members. I also think a treasurer is a very good suggestion.
Whether or not we split into two chapters, I really like having a set weekend (3rd Saturday of each month) for our meetings. It makes things easier. I would also propose that we have a set location or a schedule of rotating/ alternating locations, whether they are for wrenching or lunching.
I'm fine with dues. They would provide a foundation for moving forward with decals, shirts, etc. I would also be o-kay with taking orders ($) for various gear and having print runs based on interest. We have some logo ideas, but more are always welcomed and encouraged. The ones I did were pretty rudimentary, but we can always have someone in the digital arts clean things up ;)

I'm not sure of what the SA guys think, but if there is one big group, I'd vote for having the meetings in Austin. That'd be about an hour for people outside of town. If there are 2 groups, well, thats obvious.

Guys - sorry for being scarce.
I like the idea of having a vp or a small group to back up the prez. I vote for Eric as well - he'll be great. Dues are cool. For our next meeting we should get a group pic or solo pics. I can bring the camera and provide photographical (not pornographical) expertise. We should also try to pick a place that is a little more picturesque than a Burger Tex or Rudy's (but then again what could be more picturesque than a Rudy's brisket or ribs - mmmmm).
Hence - for our next meet I propose we meet at Dave's (by the lake) or in some Lago/Jonestown park and everybody who has a scout should bring it for pictures. Trailer it, tow it, push it or air lift it. I will try to get mine ready by then.
3rd sat of the month is great. I say we should also have a floating meet-up just for fun - keeping the 3rd sat 'sacred' for tuning/wrenching/banging/etc. That way we always know that day is set aside, will never change, and will have a purpose. As for the floating gatherings - this is informal - prob lunch/dinner/ice cream/wutever. Stuff we do anyways.
Thanks to Dave for getting these ideas kick-started. I move to have him be our VP of operations.
Now if only we can find a VP of welding-cool-stuff....

If it's cool with them, I think meeting somewhere around David's and Kevin's sounds like a good idea. They're not too far from my place, and I'll get to try out my new steer-straight brace (thanks Bob!) on the hair-pin curves of FM1431  I think I'll start calling my scout "White Knuckles" ;)

Meeting down at my place sounds great. I would be happy to host. I will reserve the lakeside pavillion if no one has objections. I could grill some food if we want to do that. Please let me know. Also, a big line of Scouts pictured down by the Lake would be cool as well. It would make for a good photo op! (even though the lake is a good 20' low.) Also, there are a few very small, very short trails, easy trail for a stock Scout is someone was so inclined. Another thing we could do at the lake.
I say we should also have a floating meet-up just for funCount me in as well, sounds great!
I move to have him be our VP of operations
Didn't see this coming. I would be happy to serve as "VP" if that is the will of the HCB. If anyone wants to challenge this nomination, please step up. :)
Concerning the VP position and the fact the issue of #1 above is on the table:
If it is the general consensus of the HCB to have two chapters Austin and San Antonio(I have seen basically two members for this and one member against this) I would suggest having a VP at both sites to help cordinate. However, we should nail down this issue (#1) before moving on that proposal - dual VP's.
More input is needed from the group on this.
Again, my position on this matter is basically this: It is my belief that the great distances between Austin and San Antonio, south Austin to north SA not that big of a deal, but north Austin to south SA is a big deal, I believe we would have bigger turnouts with two chapters. I would rather have more involement with two smaller groups than less involvement with a bigger group. And again, quartely meetings with both groups.
Concerning the money. If dues are to be paid, we will need a Treasurer. Any nominations?
It would be good to here from everyone on these issues. :)

I would like to add that currently everyone means anyone who is currently on the roster or anyone who wants to be on the roster. So if your name is not currently on the roster but you would like to be a part of the HCB, please chime in. Keep in mind we are a new group and are always looking for new/more members! :) :) :) :)

I certainly vote for Dave for VP. He will be an excellent backup to Eric. From reading the posts regarding our January meeting there are obviously several critical issues that need to be discussed where there can be dialogue back and forth. The most important of these is the organizational structure of Hill Country Binders as it relates to the members in the San Antonio area and the Austin area. For this reason I recommend that the January meeting be held at a location between the two areas so everyone has a relatively short drive. This of coarse is to encourage maximum participation from both areas so that good, balanced input can be obtained. I very much like the idea of a meeting at the lake but maybe we should save that for another time. Let's get our leadership established, our structure determined and our membership identified so that we have an organization as opposed to a loose knit group. Then we can move forward with event planning, membership development and fun things we all enjoy. Eric, I would like to suggest that you and David get together on the phone or in person and digest all of the ideas that have been put on the table thus far. By all means invite any one else you wish to set in on the discussion. Based upon what we have heard thus far and any other suggestions that may be offered during the next couple of weeks, come up with a game plan for our January meeting. Yes, leadership is a heavy cross to bare--BUT YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!

I really like the idea of getting together to talk about all these items. Seems easier to do in person.
Also, distance is relative. In Dallas, it took and hour and a half to get anywhere. I just don't see our two cities as being too far apart. I know everyone prefers to meet in their close proximity, but that may not be the best for those outside said proximity. I'm a big fan or compromise.
So, obviously, I'm for keeping the group together. However, I will totally go with whatever the group decides. I'm just happy this thing is still going! :)

Where'd you go Dave? i thought I just saw your scout a few times the past few days. Once Friday morning on the corner of Cypress Creek and Lakeline, and another time just a few hours ago (Sunday evening bout 6pm) on Lakeline southbound at the light on New Hope.

Yep, that was me, I parked by Randalls friday morning, rode to work with a co-worker.
My family and I and a buddys family, went up near Abilene area over the weekend Deer hunting. Fun Stuff! We left Friday evening. Last night coming in, we cut over from chystal falls to lakeline off of 183, go down to 1431, then home, to avoid the 183/1431 intersection.
We were coming down Bagdad last night, southbound, and saw a wrecker pulling a Scout II, it appeared to be white with Blue (so my wife said) Ralley stripes, do you know who belongs to that Scout?
By the way, my Scout performed well without any issues, other than drinking gas/fluids, I lost about 1/4 qt of oil, 1 qt of coolant, and 1/2 pint of tranny fluid, no brake or power sterring fluid was lost, for each leg of the trip.
It was good to get the Scout into its natural habitat. I will post some pics of the trip soon.

Considering the many issues that must be discussed, I agree that a neutral site is a good idea. I was wondering if anyone had any location suggestions for next month's meeting? We can start with a town and refine the location if anyone knows of a good spot. I was thinking San Marcos or possibly New Braunfels. Does anyone have any ideas?

Looked up San Marcos and New Braunfels on Google Earth, they are closer for me than San Antonio is ... I think
I'm about 1 1/2 hours north of Austin and 2 1/2 hours from San Antonio so the northern most place gets my vote :)

I'd like to propose San Marcos or even someplace further north. New Braunfels would be nice, but seems unfairly weighted towards SA. :)
I don't know of a good spot in the area. But, I wonder if we should focus on a place conducive to a group being able to talk & hear.
In Dallas, we would meet at a Sonic, park in one area which was out of the way, and circle up the chairs we each had brought. Someone got the OK from Sonic prior to the meet. Seemed to work out nicely and never had a hard time hearing.
Just one suggestion and definitely may not be the best.

I'd like to meet up with some local Binders. Hopefully my Terra should be running next month (it's been a long 4 years). I recently quit my national Mustang club because the leader was a jacka** so I have money freed up for dues if they go toward beneficial stuff for the members.

I up for some Taco Cabana! I think they have a good covered porch type area where conversations can be had easily. Click for directions (http://www.tacocabana.com/mapquest/scripts/mqinterconnect.exe?screen=map&link=map&closestn=5&closestprox=1&county=Hays%20County&event=zoom&fc=San%20Marcos&fs=TX&fy=US&icontitles=yes&mg=-979411&miles=10&ml=6&mt=298831&orig_icon_on=0&orig_lat=298831&orig_lng=-979411&si=-1&so=0&ss=0&submit=Find&level=8&event=zoom).
If there are no objections, let just say, Taco Cabana, January 20th, San Marcos, @ 11:00 A.M.
Things we may like to discuss:
#1. President / Vice President - show of hands / challenges.
#2. How we want to set up HCB, one chapter vs two, show of hands.
#3. Treasurer - need nomination / volunteer
#4. Moving forward with logo, maybe some decals or shirts.
#5. Discussion concerning dues. (Don't let this scare you, I think we all have in mind a small dollar amount, $2,000 - $3,000 ea  (Just kidding))

One additional agenda item is to begin formalizing our membership. I noticed another club that posts on the Bulletin has an application posted. I am sure other clubs have similar applications. This will become important for several reasons including voting on issues such as officers, dues, etc. A properly constructed application will also provide profile information on members which I think is important since presently most of us don't know each very well or at all. I am extreamly pleased that a good number of "new faces" are showing an interest in attending the January meeting. Regarding the meeting place, Taco Cabana is certainly an option, however it appears we are going to have a pretty good crowd at the next meeting. For that reason I believe a private room would be better if one is available. I live about 25 minutes from San Marcos and get over there often. I'll check if anything is available at no cost but it will be at least the end of next week before I know anything since I will be out of town for several days following Christmas. I'll start out by checking with my son who manages the Jiffy Lube next to Taco Cabana---he may know something. This still gives us a lot of time before the meeting. REMEMBER THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!!!!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS.

I have been travelling for work the last 3 months solid and even worse my scout has been down since spring. I finally had some time to get it back together this weekend and it looks promising - fires up.
I am interested in attendingin when i can, but I travel for work so it really is case by case for me.

Jan 20th sounds like a winner... Would be interested in lending hand in any organizational work needed to get this off the ground!!
I live in Buda, just south of Austin and north of San Marcos, so getting there is not going to be a problem.. Scout will be problem as clutch is gone.. Looks like Jan. before some money available for replacement.
Time is something I have to offer as I'm on disability right now. Waiting on the first check so I can get the clutch done!! I also happen to know the area fairly well as I drove truck for the past 11 years delivering masonry supplies to new homes all over the area.
I know of several parks in San Marcos, Kyle area that would fit our needs, and most have cooking pits if we wanted to BBQ.
My vote would be for the 2 chapters of the group because it will definitely increase participation. Only having to drive 45 minutes or an hour is a lot easier than having to drive halfway across Texas. :D
Look forward to meeting this group of people and will keep watching this thread.

I was able to get to San Marcos today and look for an indoor meeting place for our January 20th organizational meeting. How do these arrangements sound? Grins Restaurant ---11AM---private room with no room charge---order from the menu with seperate checks. This is a fairly large room which will seat about 60 people. In the event the restaurant has an unusually large lunch crowd they may have to seat some people in "our room" but that is not likely said the co-owner. I now need to have some indication if these arrangements are suitable. If we get a "go" I will provide detailed directions on how to get to the restaurant in a few days. LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT TURN OUT.

I would like to add that currently everyone means anyone who is currently on the roster or anyone who wants to be on the roster. So if your name is not currently on the roster but you would like to be a part of the HCB, please chime in. Keep in mind we are a new group and are always looking for new/more members! :) :) :) :)
I live in San Antonio and would like to become a member. What do I need to do? I am also somewhat new to the Scout scene, though I have been an avid scout lover since I was a teen. I am currently trying to get my 67' 800 running and would really appreciate some local support. As always, I have been able to count on the BB for great advice. If I can join the HCB, I'd like to help out where I can.
Thanks and Happy New Year.

Hi Army-Ant,
I am pretty sure you just became a member. :) Anyway, I am here in San Antonio. If you find a replacement 196 for your scout. Let me know. I am more than willing to come help out. Swapping out that engine, is a pretty straight forward job. If you coordinate it right you can easily have the "new" one in, in a single day.
Cheers!

Awesome!! Are there any membership dues? What about those Tshirt ideas that were floating around? Are there any shirts to buy?
Mike...thanks so much for the offer to help...I can really use it.
When are where is the next meeting?
Thanks

I think it is Jan 20th at 11am, in San Marcos. And I think the plan is, to talk about dues, leadership, t-shirts etc. I could be wrong though. I am more a lurker at this time. I have not made it to a meeting yet, and my scout is not complete yet. :)
On your 196, have you pulled it yet? Have you been able to determine exactly what is wrong with it? Can you describe the sound it was making?
Where in San Antonio are you located?

Bill's suggestion of Grins Restaurant sounds good to me. Thanks for putting in the time to "scout" out a location ;)
Anyone that plans on attending and has not yet responded, please do so. It will be nice to know how many folks to expect.

Just a quick input...
Grins is a little ways up the hill from the intersection of LBJ and Sessoms. The restaurant kind of overlooks the intersection. It's on the left side of LBJ heading up the hill...

I currently plan on attending the meeting, but I doubt my Scout 800B will be road-worthy by then. Looking forward to meeting other Scout owners in the area!

I am looking forward to the meeting this Saturday at Grins. Click here (http://maps.yahoo.com/index.php#mvt=m&gid1=19374632&q1=802%20North%20LBJ%20Drive,%20San%20Marcos%20Tex as&trf=0&lon=-97.941399&lat=29.892634&mag=4) for directions or check out Grins Website (http://www.grinsrestaurant.com/) for directions also. \
I am hoping as many of you as possible can make it to this very important HCB meeting. We have many topics to discuss and will want as much input as possible. If you know anyone who owns an IH who may not have access to the BB or may not know about the HCB getting kicked off who might be interested, please invite them to our meeting.
Hope to see you Saturday! :)

Great meeting today!! Good Turn out!!! Good to see some Scouts at these Scout meetings :) :) :) :) :)
Me and Kevin spent the afternoon helping out Tim on his Scout. He is running a holley 2210 on his 78 Scout with 345. He was having trouble keeping the thing running and when it would die, he would have to wait anywhere to 10 - 20 minutes before he could restart it. We found two problems.
One - the automatic choke was way out of adjustment and had the choke plate closed at all times  . I did not have the right tools and the temperature was not right for proper choke adjustment so I "adjusted" it so that the choke plate was wide open at all time. Ran much smoother after that. We then took the fuel air mixture screws to two turns out. They were at 1 1/4 out, thinking it had it a little lean. Two full turns out smoothed it out even more, did not have a vacuum guage to fine tune it, but by ear think we got close.
Two - We found that the coil had transmission fluid coming out of it  . This is not a good sign, this fluid is designed , I believe, to keep the coil cool. This explains why it took a while between runnings it to get it started, to allow the coil to cool. Local auto parts store, problem solved.
Keep in mind that we did most of this in the Whataburger parking lot. Anyway did not mean to hijack, this probably belongs in tech talk, but I learned something today and wanted to pass along the info. I also think this kind of comrodery (sp?) is a good thing and it is one of the benefits of a group such as the HCB.
Anyway, whose got pics from todays meeting? :)

For those that didn't make it, we look forward to seeing you at our next meeting. It will be February 17th at Grins Restaurant in San Marcos at 11am. See the link below for directions.
