Well I guess to me it is highly optioned for a 1956 Pickup. I came across a pretty nice S100 the other day. It only has 31K original miles and not a speck of rust through. The guy that owns it removed the seat and he swore it had carpeting in it but the floor board, other than some scratches, still had the paint on it. The tail gate is pretty close to perfect, but the Right rear fender and front left fender have some dents. They are not really bad but are dented.

Now to the peculiar thing, well to me any way, it has an automatic transmission and power steering, but no radio. What kind of transmission did they use, was it an International transmission?

The truck is yellow and white, other than some surface rust the body is real nice. It has been driven since 1977 but the motor is locked up. He put brake fluid in the cylinders but it is still locked up.

My question is, I know its tough without pictures, but what do you think its worth? He kind of wants to sell it but he doesn't know how much he wants for it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like a cool truck. Gotta be worth at least 3K. I know of a 57 Golden Aniv. truck that went for that with a frozen motor. Never heard of brake fluid in the cyls. A rebuild is probably in order. The 2 speed Auto is BorgWarner. :D

Brake fluid in cylinders is very bad  Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning it attracts water and will cause MORE rusting in the cylinders. I would add a bunch of marvel mystery oil ,PB blaster or kroil to the cyl. and hope it will stop the rusting.ASAP

Can you still get parts for the Borg Warner transmission? I had a little mistake in the e-mail. It hasn't been running since 1977 so I'm sure the transmission will need to be gone through. I talked to my Dad about the truck and he remembered that these engines had a problem with popping the heads off of the valves. Has anyone heard of this problem?

Thanks,

Yes, parts are available from outfits that deal in Transmissions. Your local auto parts store will more than likely look at you like

I doubt that it will need an overhaul. Usually all they need is a new pan gasket, fresh fluid, and a filter screen cleaning.

The IH 6's seem to have a propensity for dropping valves. More so on the early "straight valve" design than the later "tilt-valve" design. It seems to also stem from the fact that the engine is willing to rev far past what it's true limit is.

Most of the damage I have seen to IH 6's is due to overrevving, and also to overheating because of lack of attention to items like the exhaust flapper/heat riser on the exhaust manifold.

The engine was used in tractors, as well as trucks, and is hell-for-stout. It just is typically driven inappropriately by ignorant owners.

Just to clarify, the BW tranny is a 3 speed automatic and the internals are substantially the same as the Ford FMX. It was also offered in AMC's and other independants through the early '70's. As JD said, parts are available. I wouldn't assume it needs a rebuild until I had changed the fluid, adjusted the bands and given it a fair trial. ATF is a remarkable preservative for things that were intended to live in it :D
