View Full Version : It followed us home.........

Last Sunday, with the help of Jeremy and his Diesel Dodge, we hauled home a 66 1100A, 304, 4WD, step side long bed. Even though this truck came from the other side of the mountain, the rust monster has attacked the cab in all the usual 1966 places.
This truck belonged to my sister-in-law's brother who lost his life in a car accident on January 3rd. When the truck was offered to us, we of course said yes, even though we had no idea what it was like. I would like to put it back on the road, but with the condition of the cab; cowl and floor board rust through, I am not sure at this point what we will do with it. Both front fenders are also very bent. The bed is amazingly straight as is the hood.
I know it is not likely, but if any of you know of a 66 cab in serviceable condition, I would appreciate knowing about it.
We will post some pictures when the sun comes out, say.......... next July. ;)
Thanks,
Lyle

In my experience there is no such thing as a servicable cab in the mid-sixties rigs. You are going to end up welding and cutting to fix it no matter what you find.
Jim Price has the closest thing to a perfect cab with his truck "Boomer", and even it has door sag. :(
Terror-All's cab is nice and dry now that it has been fixed, and it only took me about 8 hours of real work to get it there. Granted, I didn't have shot floors, but the rest was pretty hashed. Floors are just a sheet of 20 gage steel, we can buy that anywhere.
If you want to get it back on the road, we are gonna have to cut and weld, which I am more than happy to either do for you, or help you with. :)
I think that may be the best option, because with that long bed option, I doubt you are gonna find too many takers for that bed.

You're forgetting the Travelette. Now we have both ends of the spectrum  .

About the best cabs I have seen may have the floor, but you will NOT find one without the rusted cowl. Cut and fix is all you can do. If you still want a cab, you are probably going to pay on the order of $100 to $300 (high steel prices), plus again as much in the fuel to go get it (high gas prices). The nearest ones I know of are Lebanon. There may be one in Madras. After that, Phil and I know where a whole truck might be had, or a couple good cabs, in Wallowa. Last time we went out there in his pickup, it cost on the order of a $300 round trip in fuel. But the parts were cheap. Granted, gas was higher then, but be prepared to pay. I still see you spending at least $300, if you are lucky.
Unless you are prepared to spend some money to either get the cab, or to buy another entire truck, I believe you should resign yourself to some major metal work, or part it out. Either way, it aint gonna be a simple affair.

Curious what the wheelbase would be with the long bed option. Did IHC make a pickup bed for the 132" or were they all flatbeds?

I totally understand what both you and John are saying. I don't expect to find one locally, but I still have to ask. You never know what may come crawling out of the woodwork.
It is all metal and metal can be fixed. It's just how much time and money do I want to spend on it.
I received an e-mail from a gentleman who has one.....................................in Ohio. Road trip, anyone? ;)
The sad thing for me is, I really like the looks of this truck with the long bed. It must have something to do with the fenders.

I have not seen the inside of my own shop for about a month now. Way too much OT. And a lot more coming. Oh well................Got to keep the government funded.

Lyle, I have an extra mid 60's cab. It's certainly not perfect, but deffinitly servicable. IIRC the rockers are good and the cab corners are good, a few dents here and there, but nothing too major. The floors do need some attention. It's still on the truck that it came on, it's one of the two trucks that I'm merging together in the C series diesel project that I've talked alot about but haven't actually worked on. If you're interested I can take some pictures. I'll probably keep the windshield and the doors, so it would be pretty much a bare cab. As long as time isn't of the essence Matt O'Bryan and I get into your neck of the woods from time to time, so shipping wouldn't be an issue. PM or email me if you are interested and we can discuss specifics and any questions.
