3/4 ton Chevy brakes on Scout Dana 44

Can I put 3/4 ton Chevy brakes on a Scout Dana 44? I figure use the Dana 30 knuckle and mount the Chevy 3/4 stuff. How much wider would the stock axle be with the Chevy brakes? I don't know if I could use the stock Chevy stub (short) axle shafts or not. I guess I have my eye on the 63" WMS daully 14bolt axle and I figure if I can get a 3/4 ton front with a similar WMS measurement that would be good.

The 1st Dana 44 I can think of with a WMS-WMS of around 63" is a Jeep Wagoneer Wide Track axle. They come 6 lug (I think....). A standard Chevy 3/4 ton front D44 will be something close to 67".

As for putting the 8 lug stuff on a Scout II dana 44 - I'd swap the entire knuckle and everything on the Scout axle. Use the Scout II inner axle shaft with the Chevy outer - it should net you 1 1/2" - 2" per side of increase width.

It is all interchangable and there are many - many options that work. But to get 8 lug with some steering option (flat top knuckles) I'd just go all Chevy from the knuckles out.

ive not done that,but it should work. the only prollem i forsee is if the oirentation of the 6 bolt spindle pattern puts caliper bracket at an angle that causes interferance with the caliper and knuckle. if that occurs,you should easily be able to grid some on the caliper and/or knuckle to make it work.

other than that-
-it will be about an inch wider per side with the 8 lug hubs
-you will HAVE to use the chevy stubs to match the chevy internal mount hub. you stock 44 scout stubs will now be of little use to you ;)

Actually it adds about 1.5" per side.

Net result.. a 63" wide axle :D



Unless you have a good reason to do so (i.e. retain stock steering) I'd use the GM knuckles as well, then you know everything works, but I don't see why SII D30 knuckles wouldn't work, just never tried it.

As other have said above, you will need to use everything from the knuckles out GM, Spindle, Hub, caliper brackets, stub shaft ect....

Thanks for the answers. I didn't even think about the Wagoneer axle. This would be SOA on a Traveler. I have a Scout Dana 44 with nothing but the housing, a spool, and 4.10 gears (installed). I am just checking out my options. I have read up on the full width axle swap with Hummer wheels. I am trying to decide between a 1/2 ton SUA Scout and a 3/4 ton SOA Traveler.

Would I need a hi-steer if I keep the Chevy steering knuckles?

You can use everything including the knuckle ~ which is what I recommend and then go with HySteer.

Marks right you should end up right at 63"(Scout axles 8 lug outters) which as you noted is the same as a c&c 14 bolt a good combo.
You could either go hy-steer or Z link to tie rod but if your going through the work I would just do hy-steer or crossover and buy the other arm later.

exactly, the chevy knuckles don't have a place for the draglink on the passener side (just one hole) ~ so doing a X-over steering will be the best thing ~ and most likely the cheapest since you don't have to buy the knuckles and such, you're looking at $120 tops plus machineing, plus draglink

this thread interests me as i keep seeing upgrades for chevy/ford brake systems. stainless 2 piston calipers and big slotted rotors. sure should bring it down fast and hard. like i need another project now............ :rolleyes:

FYI - 8 lug Chevy 3/4 full width axles are 69 1/2" Wide as opposed to the earlier quoted 67" wide.... (67" is 6 lug 1/2 ton Chevy).
