Tonight while I was talking about the garage sale, a new member to our club family approached me about an item that he wanted to donate to the sale...
I smiled and asked him what it was...
He tells me that he wants to donate a Scout II to help raise funds for the club...I quickly coordinated with Jack and between us we got names and location and the donated vehicle will be eventually taken to Jack's family farm in Woodburn with the intention being for club members to come pick-a-part and give a few bucks for the part that will then be put in the clubs kitty...
More information on the vehicle to come when we get it...
I was very excited that someone that had never been to one of our meetings felt moved enough to donate something that large to our cause...
Just wanted to share...

I know I was taken with all of you from the start, but that is besides the point. On my drive home from the meeting tonight I drove right through Brooks, so Carla, if you need another rig to hall stuff my traveler will be empty. It is no big deal since I am headed that way anyhow. Keep it in mind

I can donate the use of a car trailer to move it, if one is needed.

Carl I will keep the offer to help in mind, cause I am sure we could use it...
Terry I will keep your name in case the car trailer we use is not available when we need to move the rig...it is somewhere in Portland, Jack has the address...
It makes me very happy that Keith and I have aligned ourselves with such generous people when we joined this club...

Everyone should know, Larry Schimidt, a new member to IHSTO, is the party that is kindly donating this Scout to use as a fund raising "vehicle" for our club.
I want everyone to know that name, because his gracious offer still has me thinking "How could you not love a group of people like we have?"
I will try to coordinate with Terry Davidson (again, another great example of the community we share), to bring the Scout II out to the farm here in Woodburn.
We will plan a coordinated event in April around this Scout II to either part it or make her running again, depending on her condition, in an effort to raise IHSTO funds without dues or subscriptions.
Thanks to Larry and Terry for your roles in this.
Respectfully,

Thanks to Larry and Terry, this '76 Scout waits to make her contribution to the club.
A little worse for wear, but lots of clean metal, both 44's still intact, sans engine, components, and hubs. I wish I had a front windshield that wasn't cracked.
Does anyone feel as I do that it would be a sad thing to strip her down? An old Title sits safely in a file here waiting to be renewed. Looking at her you can almost feel the fun that she has given her occupants over the years.
I do realize that by tearing her down, a few choice pieces of metal might net more than selling her in total. But is that what we are in this for? Personally, looking at her, I would like to see her roll again, but she is not my Scout. She belongs to all of you for the benefit of the club.
Not the best picture, but take a look and get back to me. We aren't exactly voting on this but I would like to hear all of your input.
Respectfully,
Jack

Is there any way we could make this a "project truck"? Like, try to find sponsers and put all the best parts on it? Use it to compete in 4x4 compititons all aroud? Maybe those of us who weld very well could contribute to the suspension and things of that nature? I would also like to see her roll again. Maybe it could be the flagship (flag-scout?) of your club or the web site, like a moving billboard. With even a minimal donation from everyone, this could be a huge reality. I know i would contribute a wrench and a few bucks. Look at how many people with big hearts use this board. I am sure many of them would back me up on this. Just an idea......

IHSTO'ers,
It is amazing to me sometimes how what some folks might term "parts truck" is in reality "good vehicle".
The donation of this Scout still knocks me for a loop, both in the generosity of the individual who put the beast in our hands, to the level of "get it done" performed by our club members in getting it to our "Binder Haven" that we have created here.
Close inspection during a visit to our "Haven" has determined one thing, she ain't a scrapper boys and girls.
We have a platform here to do something grand, different, and most of all, noble. Saving another Binder from the Scrapheap is the noble thing, finding yet another outlet for our club to have fun is the grand part, and different will be deciding what to do WITH the beast.
I for one like unknown user and Scoutkid's idea of building it into something we could auction at NWBRU, but that will take $$$, Sweat, your extra spare parts that you have laying around, and most of all, your time.
But, we could do it, and do that thing that we all love at the same time, see that Binder where she belongs, on the road, on the trail, and in the hands of someone who would give it the thing it most deserves, A HOME.
I think we all agree that Binders are best as a member of your family, they aren't just cars. These machines have souls like no other in my opinion, and don't deserve the indigantion of the death in a scrapheap.
IHSTO has a vast network of gearhead knowledge as yet untapped, we have shops, tools, parts, folks, and the WILL to get it done, SO LET'S PARTY!!!!:D

IHSTO'ers,

IHSTO Friends,
In my last mailing to all of you, I omitted a name I would like you to recognize: Keith Louden.
Larry Schmidt graciously donated a Scout to our club, Terry Davidson provided the means to transport it, but it was Keith Louden, who coordinated all these efforts and brought it together. This is not an easy thing. So many of us were attending to business of our own that we could not arrange to help in Larry's donation. Myself included.
Except for Keith. You ask for help, he is there. Keith made the phone calls. Keith, looked up maps and addresses. Keith took time out from his schedule and in typical "Louden fashion," he got it done. He even took a few digitals to mark the event.
I neglected to mention Keith which was terribly wrong. I would like to apologize to him in front of all of you for not crediting his support.
Sincerely,
Jack C. Campbell

Lets do it!!!!!!!!
I have time, I love to work on cars and truck and things that go and am fairly capable at turning a wrench (I have alot of patients when it come to that, ask me some time I will tell you the story). Anyhow I was hoping that when I got into this club I would get the oppertunity to work on other rigs besides my diesel. I want to learn about Axel's and all that off roading stuff I just barley know. Here's an oppertuniy to teach, learn and grow
Thanks Everybody

To whom it may Concern, After reading this thread I am truly touched by the big hearts in the Binder Community. I can only hope that when the Wyoming Scout Club gets off the ground we can get this type of members in out Club. The donation, the foot work and coordination are truly what makes this country great. I for one would like to se the girl running again and will try to do what I can with some tyoe of donation of my own, need to talk with the better half first, money is tight in the winter months for us but do have a few parts floating around. I wish you guys & gals all the luck with waht ever you decide to do with the "76" Scout. Personally I like all the ideals the charity one the best, the rolling bill board second. God Bless & God Speed on this project.

First let me say thank you for not dismissing my idea right off the bat. I know i don't belong to your club, but i DO belong to the one club we all belong to, "The IH Owners of the Universe Club" and i will do my best to get pieces and parts together for you all. I would love to do anything i can to get her back on her feet again. Thing is, i KNOW we ALL have misc. parts and things laying around that "we might use someday", well my friends, "someday" is today. You could really go two ways with this undertaking. You could get the line set ticket and restore her to all her original beauty, or you could go big and fancy with lifts, tires and the like. If you went the former way, heck, if it originally came with a 304, i would gladly donate the one straight out of my daily driver to put in it. It runs great, and a quick mild rebuild (which could be one of the groups learning experiences ) would be the only thing you need. Heck i even have a few 345 cores laying around if that suited your fancy. Heck, if someone has a digital video camera, which i am sure someone up there does, just video everything you do to it, and upload them onto the web site online, for all to see. You know, things like replacing body mounts, floors, axles, you name it. This would not only end up as a great benefit to your club, but to all IH owners who use the BB online! What a usefull tool!! I say get a list together of EXACTLY what you want to do with the truck, and post it here. I bet out of ALL of us users, we can nearly complete your project with a very minimal budget. In fact i challenge all BB readers to take part in this undertaking and donate whatever they can, if you need a certain year's marker lights, of dash knobs, post it. SOMEONE HERE WILL HAVE IT!!! So thank you for concidering Bill and I's options, I know this will be a great thing, for your club, and the whole scout community. Thank you.

I appreciate the nod from Jack, John and Terry in acknowledging my part in the donated delivery...I would imagine that we will be talking at our next meeting which is 3-7-2002 7:00 p.m. at Chu's Eatery in Woodburn about what to do with the donated Scout...I have enjoyed the time spent with the club and club members engaging in activities and recovery efforts and it is nice to be appreciated for that~

Bindernuts,
We had our meeting last Thursday at our new digs, the turnout was huge, the food was great, the fellowship as always, awesome.
We covered much ground, especially concerning the Donated Scout II.
We polled the room for ideas.....
Do we part it out and put much needed money in our club coffers?
Do we save it?
The mood of the room said "SAVE".
The vote was a riotous "YES!!!!!!"
So there you have it boys and girls, yet another IHC machine saved from the Scrapyard man, and a much needed "obscene gesture" made at Uncle Sam and his Greenie agenda.
Now comes the part about the direction of said machine.
We have many options here, which will be brought to the floor at the next meeting, and voted on. In the traditions of our Founding Fathers, it will be determined DEMOCRATICALLY.
1.) We can restore to stock.
2.) We can mild-modify and restore.
3.) We could go hog-wild and build a do-anything trail machine.
4.) We can auction it off, and put money into the club once it's done.
5.) We can use it as a "ambassador of the IHSTO and responsible use" agenda.
But most of all the one thing that is guaranteed to happen is, we are all going to have a learning experience about how to fix and clean, weld, scrounge, and rebuild. Which will be fun.
All of us have Binders, some of us fix our machines ourselves, others have fear of getting thier "hands in it" so to speak.
Here is an opportunity for those that like to fix to teach those that fear how easy and much more economical it is to repair it yourself, and how much the odds increase that it is done right the first time that way.
We will degrease together, clean together, overhaul together, and "torque to spec" together.
And that leads me to the next part, who will lead our overhaul?? This must be an organized person, who can keep the determination of the club vote in perspective, has a large amount of mechanical know-how, and most of all, will finish what is started.
All of you as club members need to start thinking about that, and those of you willing to "pony-up" for the task need to start raising your hands so we can vote on the leader at our next meeting.
The club officers, and our new "parts trackers" will handle finding the stuff, and getting whatever donated stuff we can, the rest of you have fun with our new project.
All of you here on the BB following this project as it progresses watch this thread for updates.

John Donnelly

IHSTO'ers,
Zach Williams has offered the use of his time, his shop, and his courage for this endeavour.
No one else has contacted me about being a possible candidate for this, and the DEADLINE is 31 March to toss your hat in the ring for consideration for this most noble of causes.
If I receive no further volunteers for the project, then Zach will be "the man" by default, and it will be announced at the April meeting. If we have others who wish to lead this charge, then we will VOTE in April, and the winner gets the honor of leading our project machine endeavour.
I look forward to this project with zeal, and hope that all members of IHSTO and our friends on the web site enjoy what comes of this adventure we are taking on.

IHSTO'ers,
Zack Williams will be our new "Project Donated Scout" Leader.
Let me be the first to congratulate him on this esteemed position, this undertaking is without question the most noble effort that I have seen since my introduction to IHC products.
I have contacted Terry Davidson about moving the Scout to Zack's shop as soon as practical.
I hope all of you can take the time to congratulate Zack on his new position in the club, and help out on this project where you can. A great deal can be learned from this undertaking, engines, brakes, wiring, bodywork, axles, springs, transmissions, the list goes on and on.
It will be fun, a learning experience, and best of all, another IHC machine saved from the scrapheap.
Congratulations Zack, and all of you, KEEP ON BINDERIN',

Members of IHSTO, and followers of the Binder,
With Summer having departed for another year, and the bad weather approaching, our thoughts turn to our project vehicles once again.
Time to fix that nagging leak, get those new lift-springs on, go to one of our favorite shops to get a new something welded on, get another Binder out of the Primordial ooze known as a farmers field, or begin that restoration.
That is where we are at in IHSTO. Restoration.
The Scout Resurrection project fell idle due to summer events, and now we need to get back to it.
Zach Williams will be getting with Jack, Colin, and Lisa to get some work parties scheduled so we can start bringing another Binder back from the dead.
So, to prevent the onset of Cabin Fever, and give you all something to do, get out your tools, and lets get crackin'.
Watch this thread and the BB Calendar for work party developments, and please donate your time to this worthy effort. All of our Membership wanted to see this happen, so lets make the dream a reality.

Members of IHSTO, and fellow Binderphiles,
I have received some tenative dates from Zach Williams for work parties. We should have a good packet of information for members in the next few days.:D
Expect a frame cleaning and painting session first, along with spring hanging, and a full axle checkout and reinstallation to follow.
Then in January, Colin Rush will be giving his class on 727 Transmission overhaul. That portion will take two work parties to complete. Those not interested in the Trans overhaul class can work on the chassis for the Scout on those same two dates.
Watch this thread, and the BB Calendar for updates.

But, as the leaves fall, it is time to get back to business.

Unfortunately, I had already made other plans for Sunday when I read about the work party.
I do see this as a worthwhile project with lots of possiblilties for learning as we go. (Note: Upcoming 727 rebuild) But it is going to take more than Zach, Mike, Jack and John (and those of us who attended the first workshop) to make this happen. I remember the resounding affirmation from the IHSTO membership to resurrect this Scout, so, come on IHSTO members, let's make this happen.

Well my friends, the Project Scout has made some.... PROGRESS!
Today we cleaned, removed dead bushings, organized parts, and enjoyed the comfort of Zach's truly stellar shop. Heat and nice lighting, not to mention all the tools make for an easy day of fixin'.
What we now have is a clean frame, that with a bit more elbow grease will be ready for a fresh coat of black paint, clean axles ready for a once-over, and a set of springs ready for bushings to be installed.
We also have a mountain of parts heading for the bead-blaster (thanks Rick Shelburg!) and our bent and very damaged front spring perches received some of the world-class repair work that only Lukas Shuler of Granite Motorsports can provide. Luke ground, straightened, and then gusseted those front perches so they are ready for another 20 years of road and trail duty.
Zach Williams led us on the path to getting organized, and then took to pressure washing all those messy frame parts. Out in cold, with the pressure washer blasting away, and dressed in weather-gear, our project leader shows the dedication that only a real dyed-in-the-wool Binder guy has!
A big thank you goes out to Jack Campbell for loaning us his pressure washer. It definitely makes life easier when removing years of grime and grease!
Folks that attended today were Zach (of course ;)) Lukas Shuler, Colin Rush, Mike Foster, Rick Shelburg, and Myself.
I wanted to get a post up about today's progress, and will add another post tomorrow about what we are going to do next, and what we will need.
Colin Rush is working very hard for us to get parts donated to our cause, Jack has supplied a list of stuff we need, and I hope all of our members can pull together and help out.
Zach also informed me that some folks on the web site have begun offering a hand with various bits, and we thank everyone that has offered, and hope others can give what they can.
This is going to be a truly wonderful thing, another Binder saved from the disgrace of the scrap-heap.
Best to all, and Keep on Binderin',

Zach,
I am planning on it. I am in hopes of learning all there is to know about axels and diffs.
I may be bringing a friend along who is interested in learning about axels and diffs, too. I'll let you know for sure if he is coming or not.
See you then.

Members and Friends,
There will be an IHSTO Scout Resurrection work party on the 23rd of November.
Zach Williams, our Project Leader, has the following planned.

Somewhere in there Rick Shelburg will do an inspection of the axles with a walk-through of components. Items that require replacement will be determined, and a list of axle repair parts worked up for the February work party, as January will be devoted entirely to the Automatic Overhaul Class led by Colin Rush.
Items that need donation for this work party is as follows, members who have donated are mentioned:

2) Spring bushings - Terry Davidson THANKS TERRY!!!!:D
3) Spring Bolts - 7/16-14 GRADE 8 by 3-3/4" long- supplied by John Donnelly
4) Nuts and Washers - Supplied by John Donnelly

I can help for 3 hours or so and I'll bring a set of poly spring bushings. Granite made me a good deal since they are going toward such a worthy project.

The day was great and so was the company of all the IH fanatics. John, Carl and I were fashionably late. When we arrived, we saw Terry Davidson busy with a sawzall removing an unwanted bolt from the frame; Jeff Nemish busy with a wire brush, Rick Shelburg with a fire burning out the old spring bushings and Zach busy with a mop.
Later on in the afternoon, we spotted an unfamiliar Scout pulling into the driveway. It turned out to be Jeff and Marcy. Jeff is known as "Tonka Toy" on the BB. Marcy, I apologize if I have misspelled your name. Jeff and Marcy grabbed a scraper and wire brush and started cleaning the mud and grease off the axles.
It was a pleasure to meet these new IH owners. If you get a chance to meet them, ask them how they got their Scout.
The frame has been completely cleaned and painted with new bushings installed. The springs also have a new coat of paint. The axles are clean and ready for inspection and any needed repairs.
It was a good day.
I hope I have not forgot anything. Just add to the thread if I have.
